Chapters > Guatemala

Heading to Guatemala is like when you try your first kite loop. It seems like you are attempting something dangerous and uncertain yet you are not really sure how it is going to turn out. But once all is said and done, you kind of wonder why you made all the fuss.

This country holds some amazing memories for Susie and I, the weirdest of which was when we arrived in Lake Atitlan. I had been corresponding with a guy called Rafa whose name was given to me by Foka in Mexico. Anyhow, Rafa had said to me that when I arrive in Lake Atitlan, I should give him a call. Rafa obviously could not know that I would not be able to get to a phone when I arrived. Instead I just dropped off my bags, grabbed a tuk tuk and headed off in the direction of where he had told me his house was (actually one should call it a hotel rather than a house).

It must have looked fairly ridiculous, as there I was in the middle of nowhere walking along the road with a kite and board on my back. I came to the entrance of a hotel, which I later found out was also the entrance to Rafa’s house, and started to ask the security guy if he knew Rafa. At that moment a 4 x 4 pulls up. The window winds down and this beaming grin says to me “Hey, man, you a kite surfer? Jump in.”
