Chapters > Nicaragua
Moving onto Nicaragua is like learning your first back roll. You are comfortable enough with your momentum and now you want to step up things a notch. You pop into action, whilst looking over your shoulder. There is no turning back until suddenly you are on your feet cruising in the same direction.
Nicaragua was not actually on our list to visit. We were persuaded by some random guy that we should not miss it, so off we went. When I think of Nicaragua, what immediately comes to mind is the epic kiting, the camping next to a live volcano and the ongoing love saga of our friend Kate who we met in Guatemala and who travelled with us, and of course the antics of the very funny Martina, who kept me in hysterics with her great sense of humour.
It was such great country and I would urge you to pay it a visit. I’ll try and focus on the kiting part though, but if I break into a story that comes to mind, please bear with me, as you have done thus far.
Nicaragua is one of those countries where people normally say “Nica what? Where is that?” It is one of those countries that people just do not seem to know a lot about. But this little gem has so many undiscovered pearls, it is no wonder ex-pats are starting to flock to the remote regions to buy property for next to nothing.
Places to crash
There are approximately five places to crash in Santa Domingo. Places
to stay in this tiny village are limited. We stayed in Santa Domingo Hotel
which turned out to be great value. The hotel also had good food and cold
beer so there was no real reason to head anywhere else. Not that there
are many places to go anyway. There were a few places up the road, but
essentially, this village shuts down by 9pm. Don’t expect a huge
party in this place. In fact, buy a bottle of rum before you go.
